Our Story

Watchmaking in the UK was once a major industry, but sadly much of it has been lost through time. More recently, a number of British watch micro-brands have been established, which is excellent news. However, if you scratch the surface, you’ll find that many of these brands are simply assembling watches using parts imported from overseas, mostly from China, which we feel misses the mark of true British craftsmanship. This is not how we like to do things at DAWSEY; when we say our watches are made in Britain, they really are.

At our facility near the market town of Marlborough, in the county of Wiltshire, in the South West of England, we manufacture as many parts for our watches as possible by ourselves, all the way from billets of raw material through to the final product. For the few parts we don’t currently make ourselves, we always source from trusted UK-based suppliers. From start to finish, every DAWSEY watch is crafted with care, attention, and a commitment to doing things the right way - by keeping British watchmaking alive.

Meet the Founder

My name is Sam, and I am the founder of DAWSEY Watches. I’ve always had an interest in watches, long before the brand was established. My fascination with watches dates back to when I was around five years old, proudly wearing my first Timex watch on a black resin strap, which I purchased with my own pocket money. As the years went on, I developed a deep appreciation for mechanical watches - the intricate craftsmanship, the precision, the engineering - I knew I had an interest in something special. My passion for watches grew alongside my career in engineering.

As a professional engineer with experience working in motor racing, including Formula 1, and later for a large global automotive manufacturer in the UK, I have always been drawn to precision and innovation. Yet, I noticed a lack of modern British-made watches, which inspired me to take matters into my own hands. In 2015, I purchased a lathe and milling machine and began experimenting with creating my own watch parts. By 2018, I was creating designs that could be made using conventional methods on my own machine tools. In 2021, with the birth of my first son, DAWSEY Watches was also born. After further prototyping and development, I continued to invest in additional equipment and tooling to finally produce watches that I am proud to call my own.

Handcrafted and Built to Wear

Our watches are handmade in small batches, and yes, that means there might be the occasional subtle mark, reflecting its handmade nature. To us, that’s part of the charm. These are watches made to be worn and enjoyed, not locked away in a box. After all, every scratch tells a story.

We take pride in using unconventional and challenging methods to produce our watches. From the selection of materials to the unique construction techniques, we’ve chosen to push boundaries and approach watchmaking in a way that isn’t typical. This not only allows us to create something genuinely distinctive but also reflects our determination to innovate while maintaining traditional craftsmanship.

After machining, finishing, assembling, and testing our watches, they are safely packaged and delivered to the local Post Office by bicycle and shipped via Royal Mail, because reducing environmental impact and supporting British industry matters to us.

Every DAWSEY watch reflects the time, skill, and care that went into making it. It’s not just about the end product; it’s about the process, the pride, and the story behind it.
